Parts of South Punjab and Sindh may witness isolated showers/rain during that period.

GFS and COLA shows another monsoon spell starting right after the eighth monsoon spell weakens in the northern areas. New developments by numerical model shows monsoon activity weakening significantly from Pakistan in September, possible withdrawal. Long range models shows one to two western disturbances affecting northern areas in September, nothing meaningful for central and southern areas.

Pakistan under floodwater again – Guinness World Record?

$

‘Not a Natural disaster but a man-made disaster!’

Floods: I am back in Pak!

Floods: I am back in Pak!

Pakistan should be on the book of Guinness World Record because thanks to our government and authorities we are under floodwater for fourth consecutive year, this year flood situation is similar to the pattern of 2010 floods that started after the record-breaking rains in the north and flood waters moved from the north and ended up in the Arabian sea.  The 2013 flood started after intense rains in the northern areas of the country on August 13 and  August 14, according to the Natural Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) atleast 178 people have died while 855 are injured, current floods have affected 1.5 million people across Pakistan.

Were these rains enough to cause floods?

WHO-Pak-2013

Heavy monsoon observed in NE Pakistan.

This year the behavior of monsoon had been erratic, most part of the country witnessed normal to below normal rains while parts of Balochistan and northern strip of the country (Islamabad, north Punjab, Azad Kashmir and adjoining Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) has witnessed normal to above normal rains.

Despite that, the rains should not have caused flood situation to go out of control as during normal monsoon there are frequent intense rains in the north. This monsoon there were one to two ‘scattered to widespread heavy downpour’ rest of them were ‘isolated to scattered heavy downpour’ in upper parts.  In 2010, 2011 and 2012, the floods were caused by record-breaking rains, not the case in 2013. The World has severely criticized Pakistan for their lack of preparedness during the monsoon season while no major precautions were taken as the infrastructure damaged during the 2010 is still in ruins!

Nothing learned: Getting flood since 2010!

Our government is least bothered about the monsoon season they only get up from their sleep when the country is under water, the good news till now is that there is no threat of heavy downpour in September in southern and central parts while north may have a monsoon spell. Since the people of this country are left at the mercy of nature, my personal wish is that monsoon should withdraw from Pakistan in coming days!

‘Monsoon brings flood no matter who is running the city’

Karachi: The mixture of East and West

Karachi: The mixture of East and West

Today’s crisis-hit Karachi was once considered a peaceful and clean city in the British India, it was upgraded to a city by the British government therefore we see the city’s old architecture having a striking resemble’s to some European cities.

Facts about British Karachi

  • Britishers came to Karachi on February 3, 1893.
  • Englishmen wanted to make Karachi into a mega sea port city.
  • Karachi port became the largest exporter of wheat in the East.
  • People in search of jobs came from China, Arab states, UK etc.

Karachi flooded in 1944

British Karachi experiencing urban flooding

British Karachi experiencing urban flooding

The above picture is taken in 1944 but the year and the date is not known neither the location but it can be said that the picture was taken during the monsoon season. According to the data collected from Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), on 27 July 1944, a cyclone left some 10,000 people homeless in Karachi, the picture might not be related to the cyclone.

However a news article from Pakistan’s Dawn Newspaper shows that very heavy downpour occurred on August 2, 1944 as 162.4 mm rain was recorded which is the highest rainfall for August.

  • 2013 Monsoon in ending phases?

  • ‘Withdrawing monsoon’ to give more rain to north!

  • Tropical season beginning!

Temperature and Precipitation till September 15

Temperature and Precipitation till September 15

The Monsoon season of 2013 reached it’s peak in Pakistan in the month of August when it poured high intensity rains in the south and the central areas that were experiencing a dry rainy season though the north continued to experience above normal rains in June, July, August and even in September.

Monsoon has withdrawn from most Pakistan!

Monsoon leaving the sub-continent

Monsoon leaving the sub-continent, Alas!

The process of monsoon withdrawal started since last weeks of August in south and central parts and by the first week of September the monsoon withdrew from these parts. Northern areas of Pakistan are experiencing probably their’s second last monsoon spell that started on September 8. This year the monsoon withdrawal has been mostly normal as compared to past three years – 2010, 2011 and 2012. In all those three years, the monsoon extended till the middle of September with heavy downpour.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) might declare monsoon withdrawal from western India on September 9.

Eleventh Monsoon Spell

The upper parts of Pakistan have been witnessing daily rain (isolated to scattered in nature) since the beginning of tenth spell on August 27 before that a short dry gap was witnessed. The rain coverage increased again on September 8 as thick clouds were observed on satellite image as the the 11th Monsoon spell (first mentioned in Monsoon of Pakistan on September 1) hit the Northern areas on September 8 (with +1 day error). The intensity remains moderate so far.

North – More rain likely?

11th and 12th spell - Rain clouds seen in North.

11th and 12th spell – Rain clouds seen in North.

Notice: As compared to the previous spell, the 11th monsoon spell is weak in intensity however due to western low and continuous penetration of weak moisture from Arabian sea, some areas of north will have chances of rain in the coming week after that a decrease in moisture is seen.

Due to the eleventh monsoons spell, showers/rain along with thunder/lightning can occur in Islamabad, northern Punjab (Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree city, Jhelum, Gujrat, Sialkot, Norwal, Sheikpura, Gujranwala, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin and few adjoining districts), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Naran, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Haripur, Swabi, Battagram and few adjoining districts), FATA (Khyber Agency, Kurram Agency, Orakzai Agency and few adjoining areas) and Azad Kashmir (Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Mirpur, Rawalakot and few adjoining areas). The 11th spell can remain till September 9/September 10. Most rain bearing clouds can form/stay in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mostly dry with passing clouds expected in Faisalabad, Okara, Pak pattan, Sahiwal, South Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan and few adjoining areas during this period.

Central Areas: Monsoon nowhere to be seen?

Mostly dry weather expected with few passing clouds in south Punjab (Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan and other adjoining areas).

Dry weather expected with few passing clouds in many parts of Balochistan (Barkhan, Dera Bugti, Musa Khel, Zhob, Qila Saifullah, Loralai, and few adjoining districts).

South: Monsoon has left the building!

Mostly dry weather with passing clouds is expected in most parts of Sindh (Karachi, Thatta, Jamshoro, Dadu, Nawabshah, Larkana, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Sukkur, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khar and other areas). Partly/mostly cloudy weather can be witnessed in coastal Sindh especially Karachi while eastern areas of Thatta, Badin and lower Tharparkar can witness low and mid-level clouds .

Small weak cloud formation can take place on Panjgur, Kech and Awaran districts of Balochistan. Other areas of Balochistan will remain remain with few passing clouds (Kharan, Lasbella, Khuzadar and other adjoining areas).

12th Monsoon spell?

From the middle/late of this coming week, temperatures can increase in parts of the country by 2°C/3°C.  There is a probability that once the coverage of the 11th spell dies down on September 9 night/September 10, a similar intensity spell can affect the northern areas on September 12 (+1,-1 day error). After the 12th spell, mostly dry weather is expected in the upper parts.

Tropical Seasons begins as monsoon withdraws!

GFS and long range model points towards depression

GFS points towards tropical activity in N.Indian Ocean

The west coast of India can witness some rain as the eastern Arabian sea is set to become a hub of clouds from the coming late week. Weak clouds from coastal Gujarat can move into coastal and south-eastern Sindh. While there is a tropical depression formation alert during the third week of September as a numerical models points towards the formation of a depression near Maharashtra coast. All tropical activities in the Arabian sea are always monitored by PWP either it affects Pakistan or not!

The Arrival of the Orange Moon!

Harvest-Moon

The harvesting season has begun!

If you are a space enthusiast then you are in for a special treat as on September 20 evening, people in Asia will witness a special face of Moon known as the ‘Harvest Moon’. The harvest moon was also visible on September 19 in the continent while the western continents saw it early on September 18.

Harvest Moon: Length of Day and Night are same!

Orange Moon over the skies of Karachi

Orange Moon over the skies of Karachi

The Harvest Moon or the Corn Moon appears during the fall in the northern Hemisphere in the ‘autumnal equinox’. What is equinox? This phenomenon causes the length of day and night to be equal all over Earth during the fall and the spring season.

The thing special about the Harvest Moon is that appears orange. According to US’s NASA the reason for the orange moon is due to the ‘greater thickness of atmosphere in the direction of a horizon, due to which a blue light is dispersed and hence one tends to see a brighter, orange moon.’

Visible in Pakistan?

Since the monsoon season has ended, the moon is visible across the country. The picture displayed by PWP was taken during the evening at that time the moon was clearly orange. So what are you waiting for? Get out! and look at the Harvest Moon!

Post Monsoon system no longer under watch for depression

Low pressure over Gujarat on September 26

Low pressure over Gujarat on September 26

The Sindh province usually does experiences a post monsoon spell in some years during the month of September due to the formation of a weather system (upper air cyclonic circulation) in the Arabian sea or a weather system (low pressure) over western India. According to weather history, Sindh has experienced tropical activity in September or October which do fall in the category of a post monsoon.

Background: Post Monsoon and Tropical Activity

On September 1, PWP mentioned in the Monsoon of Pakistan page that a weak post monsoon activity can occur in Sindh in Middle of September (first post spell occurred on Sept 13 which brought 13 mm rain to Mithi). While another spell can occur in coming days as a low pressure over lower central India is moving in a SSW direction. On September 8, PWP mentioned in it’s Pakistan Weather Update & Tropical Watch that a tropical activity can take place in the Arabian sea in the third week of September, a system can intensify near Maharashtra coast however as we see that has been now scheduled for the fourth week.

Update on September 23 at 10:00 pm PKT – Watch for a low pressure!

GFS is showing depression near Sindh

GFS is showing depression near Sindh

On September 19 an intense circulation over north Bay of Bengal intensified into a low pressure over Indian state of Odisha and adjoining west Bengal, it continued to move in a westward direction though later changed it’s direction to SSW. On September 21, it was over south of Indian state of Madya Pradesh as it tracked in a SSW direction with a circulation south-west of the system.

  1. COLA AUS: On September 24, the system could track towards Maharashtra and adjoining Gujarat coast and from September 26, it will start moving towards Gujarat coast. On September 27/September 28, it will be near Gujarat and adjoining Sindh coast with possible intensification into a minimal depression.
  2. GFS UK: It is showing similar to the COLA Model, with back and fourth movement (possible minimal depression) around the Gujarat and adjoining Sindh coast with complete dissipation during the first week of October near Gujarat-Sindhi coast.

Rain for Sindh?

US Model shows 75 mm rain in eastern Sindh

Amazing, US Model shows around 75 mm rain in eastern Sindh

“Warning: Thatta and Badin can experience heavy downpour and strong gusty winds along with rough sea around September 27/September 28/September 29, fishermen should obey the government’s warning!”

Hot temperatures with chances of drizzle/showers with thunder/lightning in Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta and Umerkot districts till September 25. Increase in activity can happen afterwards – On September 27/September 28 (+1,-1 day error), rain with thunder/lightning along with gusty winds can occur in Thatta, Badin, Tharaparkar, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Tando Muhammad Khan, Hyderabad and few adjoining districts.

Coastal areas of Thatta district (Keti Bandar and Shah Bander), Badin and few adjoining areas can experience heavy downpour and strong gusty winds along with rough sea during that mentioned period as strong thunderstorms will be near its coast.

What about Karachi?

Hot temperatures will continue this week, on September 27/September 28 (+1,-1 day error), rain with gusty SE/NE winds can occur in the metropolis with high tides. COLA shows >15 mm rain while GFS shows >10 mm rain during that period. According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Karachi’s average September rain is 22.8 mm.

Update issued on September 26 at 10:00 pm PKT

“Post Monsoon system is no longer under the watch for tropical depression!”

COLA shows low moving away from Sindh

COLA shows low moving away from Sindh

COLA and GFS maintained the tropical depression run till the morning of September 24 however after that they have shown that an incoming western trough ’22′ would impact the overall track of the system, rain can occur in the northern areas of Pakistan in coming days.

According to the numerical models, the low pressure instead of moving in a WSW/SSW direction (entering Arabian sea), it has moved in a WNW direction and now lies over western Gujarat over the Kutch area of the state, it has further intensified. The process of re-curve can start from tomorrow evening/night and the system can move in a brief NNW direction before moving in a ENE direction. After that COLA shows the weakened system to again enter eastern Gujarat in a SSE direction.

Despite change in direction, there are chances of post monsoon spell in parts of Sindh though the intensity would be less now.  On September 27, Rain with thunder/lightning at times isolated heavy with strong winds can occur in eastern districts (Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Umerkot and Mirpur Khas district). Chances of showers/rain in Hyderabad, Sanghar, Khairpur, Sukkur and adjoining few district. Slight chances of drizzle/isolated showers in Karachi, the temperatures will remain high due to lack of sea breeze as eastern winds would continue to dominate the city. On September 28, more rain can occur in the eastern districts of the province, decrease in clouds in other parts of Sindh. Following is the amount of rainfall recorded in the province due to this activity;

  • September 24
    Nagarparkar got 17 mm.
    Diplo got 16 mm.
  • September 25
    Nagarparkar got 34 mm.
    Diplo got 5 mm.
  • September 26
    Nagarparkar got 4 mm.
    Mithi got 3 mm.
    Badin got 2 mm.
  • September 27
    Nagarparker got 97 mm.
    Mirpurkhas got 45 mm.
    Islamkot got 41 mm.

    Karachi got 11 mm.
    Mithi got 9 mm.
    Nawabshah got 4 mm.
    Badin got 3 mm.
    Hyderabad got 1 mm.

Is cyclone forming?

No numerical model shows any immediate cyclone formation. Following is the list of tropical development seen in the month of September during the 21st century;

  • On September 25, 2001 – A depression later strengthening into a Cyclone over Arabian sea. It’s trough brought clouding to SE Sindh.
  • On September 30, 2004 – A depression formed near Indian coast that late intensified into Cyclone Onil bringing more than 100 mm rain to Thatta.
  • On September 21, 2006 –  A depression formed over northern Arabian sea near Gujarat coast that intensified into Cyclone Mukda, it affected no land and dissipated over water.

Gwadar Island: Balochistan Earthquake fails to remain the top news of Pakistan!

‘Pak forgets quake victims: Twitter and Facebook filled with Gwadar Island!’

Pak-earthquake-gwadar-island

Pakistani people and their media have given minimum coverage to the earthquake in Balochistan as compared to the disaster elsewhere in the country while the media and the people (Pakistani trends on Twitter) are more interested over the Island that formed near Gwadar, no doubt the emergence of Island was quite interesting however it is worth mentioning that emergence of such Islands is some what considered normal near the Makran coast but proper coverage should have been given to the Balochistan’s earthquake victims as 300 people are dead while 500 are injured.

Even after 30 hours of the earthquake, there is still confusion about the exact extent of damage and number of deaths in the province while the nature, height and length of the Island have all been calculated !

“Joy on twitter – Lets tweet about the Island and start giving it names!”

Pictures of Island everywhere – Few pictures of the affected areas!

According to the locals, widespread destruction has occurred in Awaran district while 90% villages are destroyed in the area, shouldn’t this receive full time coverage like any other disaster in the country? Oh Yes! It wont because the disaster occurred in Balochistan and news from Balochistan does not sell in the media neither Pakistanis want to know about the condition of Balochistan! The media defends itself saying that they dont have much access to the province and they face threat from terrorist groups, most of the province has heavy presence of security officials.

Some people on Twitter and Facebook have severely criticized the overall media’s performance. Balochistan has experienced little coverage during the disasters in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and now 2013!

  • More than dozen dead!

  • Hundreds injured!

  • Obey Government’s warning!

BREAKING-NEWS1It has become a yearly story in Punjab, fog is becoming the second most deadly weather in the country after the monsoon season. In Multan district at least 18 people died due to the dangerous fog. Many cities of Punjab have been effected which include Lahore, Gujranwala, Jhang, Layyah, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalnagar.

North-eastern and south Punjab is covered with thick fog which would only ease significantly if there is proper winter rain which is no where to be seen. A weak western system might cross from Gilgit-Baltistan from tonight till December 19 noon that might bring isolated showers with thunder/lightning in Islamabad and other surrounding areas however it might have no to little influence on the foggy conditions in Punjab, the fog might ease in the province during the weekend.

Middle East experienced the weather of Europe

Snow uplifted the mood of the people from turmoil

Snow uplifted the mood of the people from turmoil

Roads all white, snow falling on the ground! Wait, rub your eyes to find whether you are having a dream or it is really happening. This is what might have had happen to you if you were living in Cairo , a city that experiences snow once or twice a century. Snow pellets occurred in Cairo after 112 years.

Egyptian snow fools many!

As the snow-hit view of Cairo hit the Social Media, many people started posting fake picture of snow.  Following are some of the pictures that fooled the world;

Is this Cairo? Think again - Its Japan

Is this Cairo? Think again – Its Japan

And the picture that went viral;

Pyramids in Snow? No, its a filtered image

Pyramids in Snow? No, its a filtered image

So don’t believe everything on the internet!

Nature! this is not Europe

Politically changed Middle-East witnessed another change in 2013 as the year was coming to an end. Countries like Jordan, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Egypt experienced a monstrous winter storm dubbed ‘Alexa’ by the local media that brought blizzard and torrential rains.

On December 13, 60 inches of snow had fallen in the Israeli city of Jerusalem where the Israeli Prime Minister called the unexpected event as ‘once in a century storm’, it was the heaviest snowfall in 60 years. Other parts of Israel too experienced fierce snowstorm. You might have heard that the Arab Kings consider themselves the purist of all and everyone not having their blood is below them well that was not the case in Jordan. In the city of Amman, the King helped the people in pushing a car that was stuck in the snow.

War-torn Syria had to experience the biggest difficulty as most people are living in the open with no shelter, unconfirmed reports suggest that 100 cm snow fell in the southern parts of the country.

  • Fog to ease, not end!

  • Snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan!

  • Will Islamabad see a proper rain?

Lahore during a chilly morning.

Lahore during a chilly morning.

The first overall significant drop in temperature in the country has occurred on December 19 night, temperature will further drop during the last days/week of December as stated on the Facebook page during last week of November. Pakistan may continue to experience dry days as no ‘proper’ winter rains/snow is seen till the end of 2013 however isolated showers/rain activity cannot be ruled out! The dry weather has led to severe fog conditions over the plains of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Is there any rain coming?

Heavy snowfall seen over GB and adjoining KPK

Heavy snowfall seen over GB and adjoining KPK

A western disturbance is over Afghanistan that would start moving into the extreme northern areas of the country from tomorrow mid-day and then it will move into Jammu & Kashmir. During the weekend (December 21 and December 22), rain with thunder/lightning can occur in Islamabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Murree, Muzaffarabad and other adjoining cities, the northern strip of Punjab (Lahore, Sialkot, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala and adjoining cities) can experience increase in cloudy weather while the intensity of fog will surely decrease. There are slight chances of isolated shower with thunder/lightning in Sialkot, Gujranwala and Narowal district of Punjab as a weak thundercloud can be nearby. Isolated Heavy snowfall can occur over Astore and Diamer and surrounding areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Kalam, Dasu and Naran of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Northern Balochistan and surrounding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa can experience some cloudy weather on December 21 and December 22 morning those cloud would move into central Punjab to dissipate.

No change, where?

Southern parts of the country will experience similar conditions, there can be a slight decrease in the foggy conditions in upper Sindh while Karachi can experience few clouds on the weekend with a slight possibility that sea breeze might be restored briefly for 24 hours, a further decrease in temperature may occur in the city (almost whole country) during the last days/week of December.

Such activities should be immediately stopped and discouraged. Facebook/Newspaper pages like that should be immediately reported for spreading hatred.
